As we enter into the year of 2012, Elizabeth and I started to think of all that our Provincetown, MA bed and breakfast, Gabriels at the Ashbrooke Inn, accomplished in 2011. It really is mind boggling and none of it could have happened without you. We would not let the first weeks of this year go by without wishing you a fabulous New Year and thank you for all of your support. We are anxious to begin our new year because of all the plans we have and ones we aren't aware of yet to make Gabriels even better. There is always room for improvement!!

Outer Cape Chorale

The Outer Cape Chorale was founded in 2002 by its conductor Jon Arterton. The Cape Cod Chorale has grown to a group of over 140 chorus based in Provincetown, Massachusetts. They are a community chorus of which no member auditions. The members simply must have one thing in common, the love of music. They even take their soloist from the chorus itself. Within the chorus you will find those who have been singing all their lives, singers who haven't sung a note since grammar school and trained vocalists. Some teach music, and some have never looked at a page of sheet music ... and yet they all come together and somehow make magic.

on December 9th and 10th at 7pm.

This is now and always has been a free event..

A goodwill offering will be taken.

They made their debut to a capacity crowd in Provincetown’s Town Hall singing Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes. Since then they have presented a program of American music called Mostly Gershwin, a concert version of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe, a concert of songs from around the world, a concert of Great Opera Choruses, a concert of music from Broadway, and an immensely popular concert of music by the Beatles. They’ve also performed a wide variety of classical works including Mozart’s Requiem and Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Bach’s Cantata 4, Part One of Haydn’s Creation and Mass in the Time of War, John Rutter’s Magnificent, Gabriel Faure’s Requiem, Franz Schubert’s Mass in G, Karl Jenkins’s The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, Ariel Ramirez’s Misa Criolla, and Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. They have twice opened for The Cape Symphony Orchestra at their annual Pops Concert in Orleans

Jon Arterton began his musical journey as a choirboy at Washington's National Cathedral. Jon holds a Master's Degree from The New England Conservatory of Music where he also served as Assistant Conductor of Choruses.

This morning I got a chance to relax on a sunny, leafy patio and enjoy a few minutes of peace all while in the heart of Provincetown. I know what you are thinking, Provincetown in July is certainly fun and is no doubt beautiful, but it’s not exactly peaceful. Maneuvering your way through Commercial Street among the cars, bikers, trucks, beach-goers, skateboarders, roller bladers, tiny dogs, big dogs—you get the point—can be a daunting and sometimes dangerous task.

Well, plan to stay at Gabriel’s at the Ashbrooke Inn next time you’re in Provincetown and you’ll be able to experience a heavenly oasis amidst the high-energy of P-town. Gabriel’s historic inn provides guests with the thoughtfulness and care of a B&B, the luxuries of a five-star hotel, and the comfort of home.

Not to mention, a stay at Gabriel’s means indulging in the delicious breakfasts cooked by the wonderful chef Jean (for those of you worried about swim-suit season I’ve heard that Gabriel’s has scrumptious fresh fruit cups). Oh, and we think it’s pretty cool that Gabriel’s is the oldest woman-owned, continuously run B&B in the country.

True2o is proud to say that this charming P-town B&B was one of our first partners for our campaign to reduce plastic trash.

Today I had the opportunity to talk with the lovely ladies of Gabriel’s, Jean, Elizabeth G. and Elizabeth Anne, on the pleasant little patio behind the inn (which would be an excellent place to spend the afternoon soaking up the sun and reading a good novel). I also got to experience the graciousness of the Gabriel’s ladies first-hand: not only did they make sure that I had a hot cup of coffee but they offered me one of Jean’s absolutely delicious carrot and raisin bran muffins (yum!).

From the beginning of our business venture in Provincetown, Jean, Elizabeth G. and Elizabeth Anne have been incredibly helpful and supportive of True2o. Gabriel’s already provided their guests with filtered, reverse osmosis water and the ladies of Gabriel’s were excited to help out with True2o’s plan to provide filtered water on the go. As Elizabeth B. explained to me, not only do they like to support “new, creative businesses,” but they also share our love of the environment and our concern over the huge amount of plastic trash generated each year.

As a volunteer for Wild Care, Cape Cod’s emergency wildlife clinic, Elizabeth B. has witnessed first-hand how plastic trash can injure native wild life—particularly birds that ingest plastic trash or get caught in plastic trash. Since disposable plastic bottles account for much of the plastic trash littering our planet, the ladies of Gabriel’s found True2o to be “a wonderful, green idea” and have given us their full support in our attempt to reduce the volume of plastic trash in P-town in this summer.

We’d like to congratulate Gabriel’s on taking a truly courageous step towards changing the way we consume water on the go. Make sure to plan a visit to Gabriel’s if you’re looking for a peaceful inn that is only seconds away from some of the best restaurants and shops in town.

Quality Assurance.

Perhaps the most important distinction between a Select Registry member inn and any other is our system of quality assurance. On the Whale front...

Endangered whales gather

in unprecedented numbers

Boaters have been warned to be on the lookout for right whales around Cape Cod Bay.

What scientists say is the largest concentration of endangered right whales ever spotted in one location is giving researchers an unusually rich opportunity to study the animals and their feeding habits.

But the gathering, an annual affair in the chilly spring waters off Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts, also raises the threat of boats striking the 70-ton mammals, according to the state Division of Marine Fisheries. The agency has posted an advisory to boaters urging them to be on the lookout for the whales and steer clear.

An amazing journey with amazing Elizabeth Anne
Ever since Elizabeth's adventures with the Brady Bunch going to the Grand Canyon, she had to go! Although, no one gave her baked beans in a flashlight ( don't ask ) we had an incredible journey.
Yes, the pictures you see in this video of Elizabeth on the edge of the Grand Canyon, is just that! There were no cliffs right below her, she was dangling her legs over the ultimate edge of the canyon.
I did not share in that adventure!
We also explored Sedona where we stayed for a few days and that was quite the experience!
See, Elizabeth Anne is fearless, she does however have ONE fear, UFO's. It's quite amusing to witness, she will watch anything or do anything adventurous, mention UFO and she is a cookie cutter out of the room. She was unaware that Sedona was UFO capitol of the universe so let me tell you, that was worth it to see her face as we passed UFO billboards, landing sights, alien models all over the place. I was saved for they had countless organic raw food stores everywhere.. it was a grand distraction from the gathering of people flagging down and setting up welcome centers for the aliens! :-)

Top 5 things to do in Provincetown on a winter day!

1. For starters, come to Gabriel's and pamper yourself in our amazing rooms with spa amenities, fireplaces, Tempur-Pedic mattresses, TV's in the bathroom, heated floors, delicious home made breakfast made by our baker and chef, Jean. Over 500 dvd's to chose from, game, books and The Elizabeth's and Christopher!!

Oh and we can't forget our right out of the oven home made cookies each day!

2. Try ALL the restaurants in Provincetown!

If you are here for the weekend you will be able to do just that, no joke! Can't say that in the summer!

3. Always wanted to walk down commercial street and not have people knocking into you or handing you flyers for a show? Have we got a season for you to experience just that, winter!!

4. Get to know the locals! There is a local hang out you can't even get near in the summer. It's hours are fabulous, 6am to 9pm. NO COVER, it's the Stop and Shop! Anyone who is anyone can be seen there! Get your gossip and produce all in one aisle!

5. FREE PARKING! Yes, I said free parking, just about anywhere you can shake a stick at. That is worth a weekend trip alone. Imagine if you will, "Oh, I think I would like to visit utilities for some sassy kitchen ware, okay, done with that..let me walk to my car which is parked RIGHT outside the door and jaunt down to Wired Puppy for a delightful; hot coco and park right outside the door...Hmmm while my coco is cooling off why not just slide down the street a bit to see what the Waterford is having for a dinner special that night." Yes, you can continue this all down Commercial Street all while hopping in and out of your car! Too much to contain, I know!

Oops 5 1/2 things to do!

You could come see the newest family member! This is not actually our dog but Jean's doggie. Her name is Mary Grace, we call her Gracie! She is a living doll and full grown, 4lbs! She has been deemed, Gracie of the Great Room. She likes to take naps in a little basket and she fits practically in the palm of your hand. Her personality is so unbelievably sweet and she just wants to love you! And who doesn't love a dog they can put in their pocket!

Quick update from ME

Found a Lilly store on our travels the other day I hadn't yet been in, ahhhh yes, a religious experience was had! Juicing has been brought back in full force so pile on those beets!! Trying to decide where to go for a winter getaway, destination unknown as of now. Christopher was on the cover of the Cape Cod Times with his basketball team, that was big news in this house! He also got a 3 pointer in last nights game! Our weekends are full in the guesthouse and we are so happy to have Jean baking up a storm in the kitchen and turning out breakfast that rival any 4 star restaurant! We are apparently going to an Air Stream show. Yes, I said that, you weren't mis-reading. Elizabeth has always wanted an Air Stream so we are venturing off to an RV show to see the Tuna Can with wheels. And while I'm just telling all... we are all actually following American Idol, yes the entire house. We have all already picked our favs and it's just auditions! Oops I can't forget Harry's Law, totally TiVo worthy!

Tex Barry's is a well preserved diner from your Grandparents era. The hot dog is their signature dish so that is what you must order but be sure to include their special sauce on it. We thought we would each order just one dog each and ended up eating two a piece. Art, the owner who inherited the business from his mother, was a doll.

Laurel showed her daughter Merry "Meredith" some potential apartments she can move back into the NYC from her beautiful estate in Connecticut.

We are left hanging.. .Will Meredith be moving back to NYC with her family to be closer to Mom and her hubby will have no commute? I don't know, I have no idea what is happening with that story line!!!

So, yes, I walk around now with Meredith's happiness hanging over my head! She looked so worried about her living situation and so perplexed, she stated she was so "nostalgic for NYC". They toasted to her friends at the end of the episode.."Here is to uptown girls"

But, Merry are you one again??

Laurel also had a client that while yes she had a mile long wish list with a budge of $2.5 million she had a dog that over exceeded the weight limit to the condo she wanted. Oh the horror! We finally found the apartment we ( I use the queen's we, I mean the client) wanted, fit in our budget and the doggie was the problem!!?? We, the audience, were told she was going to put the doggie on a diet,

did we ever see the reveal of this clients fate?

I'm left with so many questions... I just want to know my multi million dollar clients I am shown and grow bonded to over the episode are happy!!

Is that too much to ask?

Don't even get me started on Maggie's price-lowering fiasco surrounding the

Mullberry Street loft, way back in episode 2.

Wow, the response we had regarding the last blog was overwhelming.
I personally think our life is fabulous and these are the best times I have ever had ...
Thank you for that affirmation!

Valentines day at the Inn was wonderful.

The inn was filled and we had a lovely Valentines Day Brunch
complete with heart shaped pancakes and lots of treats!

The Wickham family ( My in-laws) blessed us yet again.

I think by now they can deduct us from their taxes

This time they sent us to the Turks and Caicos

They rented a beautiful house on the water the first week and the 2nd week we were in heaven at a beautiful resort... right on a snorkeling reef.

It was without a doubt the most incredible vacation I have ever been on.

A Year in Review

Where to begin!

It was a blessed year as all years are or as they should be

My wife and family have become my focus and life

Many things in my life took years to happen and

I wouldn't give anything to have them any different

Not anything

I happen to love every minute of my life...

well... now I do.

And I do not take one minute for granted.

While the guesthouse is plastered all over our website,

it's nice to know who is behind the scenes!

So, who are these innkeepers?

Well, here is a peek

My home life is filled with laughter, adventure,

magic, traveling, wonderful guests and lots of raw food... yes, I said raw food.

Elizabeth has been on a raw food diet since the summer

and as I have suggested she is eating dirt, she suggests it's all delicious and fabulous.

She has lost 147 pounds ( as of today) so who am I to mock!

Documenting everything

Here is a trip down the raw food journey

She juices this fabulous array of fruit and veggies

Plus a million different combinations

And drinks the results and loves it

(btw, that is beet that makes that lovely red color)

She also uses a dehydrator to make things crispy.

Raw sprouts and dirt, okay okay, not dirt.

She has this down to a science, truly a science!

We have traveled the country for "the ultimate" raw food stores

In a short time we will be on our way to Turks and Caicos, Elizabeth has called the grocery store among any other food providers on the island to find out if they can provide her with her Godess of raw! I joke not

We have grown our own wheat grass so she can "juice" that too!

So, if anyone is in the need for anything raw, odds are we have it in our kitchen

next to the periodical chart and litmus strips!

Last winter as well as this winter we are spending quality time with my mother in NY. We have adventures every day with Scrabble, trips to NYC and walks along the beach. Tonight we are going to go out for Sushi which is always an adventure with mother!

October brought wonderful things!

Elizabeth Gabriel was recognized as Woman of the Year
She was honored at the Community Dinner by Sarah Peake our state representative who presented her with a proclamation from the House of Representatives of Massachusetts
Later that week Cris Williamson held a special show at the Post Office Cabaret in celebration!

A couple of nights ago we had a fabulous dinner at Gabriel's celebrating the smashing success of Women's Week 2009

Sarah Peake our wonderful state representative and fellow women innkeeper gave a toast...

The food and laughter went until the wee hours of the night!
It truly was a fabulous night that has now turned into a monthly date!

Winter Fun 2009

Winter, my favorite of all seasons. By all accounts I should live in Antarctica!

We have had a magical winter this year. For most of January, the Bas Relief Park, looked like an ice skating rink! Shankpainter pond froze solid as did the ponds in Truro. It looked like a Norman Rockwell painting exploded on the ice with all the skaters

The skaters below would be our niece Britton and great niece Lucy!

Provincetown is truly breaktaking in the winter!

We escaped via 95 South and headed to New Yawk!

Our yearly holiday party revolves around a professional reading of
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens...
Gabriel's has slowly been turning into a home inside and out Mr. Dickens would be proud of

The making of a Victorian Dickens home

How does one make a Tudor house?
You paint trim board for days:
"Tudor Brown" to be exact.
You measure your house
You arrange your Tudor Trim around 7 times..
You hold up your sketches you have done for weeks
You smile and say...
Umm could take it down and do it again?
And you hope Mr. Dickens would be happy

You find old wooden shutters

and move the Tudor Trim once again....

You make a decision
that Tudor stucco, applied behind the trim,
would indeed be to difficult
to remove after the Holiday

You forgo the stucco

Moving on to one of the 3 trees in the now "Dickens Parlor"
( popcorn and cranberry is currently being strung..stay tuned for updated pics)

You realize in a couple of days you are having a
sit down dinner for 30 people...
Time to start making the center pieces..finish the tree
tune up the cello...pick up the turkey, ham, goose and roast the chestnuts!

Roasted the chestnuts

The food is cut, diced, marinated, stuffed, roasted and
waits to be finished off tomorrow.
The decorations are complete:
English Crackers are waiting to be popped,
pomegranates, grapes and pears are piled high, figgy pudding
is setting in the fridge, the punch bowl is chilling and our eggnog is perfect

Mr. Dickens will arrive in the morning and I think we will be ready!

Thank you all for your amazing letters regarding the Town Hall page. We received a very nice email from the Town Manager, Sharon Lynn, regarding the page as well. It is all such a labor of love. History is a passion in this house.

As you all know at Gabriel's breakfast table over coffee frequently is the talk show...
"Bedside Books ...what's on your nightstand now?" ( it has a cute jingle, which we sing when that time of the morning approaches. Pity you can't hear it and see the curtain that drops from the ceiling in the Great Room)....
Do you really want to know how deep the historian, mentioned above, geek trail, runs?

See, I was not kidding! Well, the story goes deeper than just picking this book randomly off a bookstore shelf. One of the E's family has a missing portrait "mysteriously lost" from the White House, in the fire of 1814. How it fell into the family is a long story reserved for the book she will one day write about her Great Grandmother...and that book will be written!

A side note, it was great to see half of Provincetown in the Wellfleet theatre last night!
We saw a new Judi Dench movie...
I think James Bond might have made an appearance here and there.
I'm not quite sure but Christopher assures me he did...oh well.
Other than those Bond interruptions, Judi's screen time was great!
I think it's fitting to feature a couple of Judi shots.

“Coffeehouse at the Mews,” a weekly ‘open mic’ series

The Coffeehouse has been going on for almost two decades,
with weekly ‘open mics’ from November to May.

Writers, playwrights, poets, comedians, musicians and others are all welcome to perform at the Coffeehouse, which was started by the local singer-songwriter Peter Donnelly and Mews Restaurant owner Ron Robin in the ‘80s. Donnelly continues to serve as the ‘open mic’ host.

The Coffeehouse is a benefit for Provincetown’s Outermost Community Radio Station WOMR (a $3 donation is suggested). Performances start on Mondays at 8 p.m., with the featured performer taking the stage at 9 p.m.

Let us not ever forget Drag Karaoke at the Governor Bradford on Saturday nights in the winter.
Every Sunday morning we hear the tales of Saturday nights adventures with Karaoke!

Just this morning we heard the following.."Oh my god did I sing 6 songs last night..." And that was from Elizabeth Gabriel!!

Grand Union becomes Stop & Shop....

It is now official: the Stop & Shop supermarket chain will be taking over the town’s lone grocery store, now operated by Grand Union Family Markets.

This will occur in early December, and the store will be closed for approximately five days during the transition, although the pharmacy will remain open. As you can see from this picture, we truly need a new market.

Yes, we have many times that curtain drops from the Great Room ceiling during breakfast...

Goodnight to Town Hall and Veterans Day, 2008

Goodnight, dear friend

Thursday November 6th our historic Town Hall was emptied for a complete renovation.
She is going to sleep and in a couple of years this beautiful lady will be sturdy and sound once again. When you are over 100 your bones begin to need a bit of a lift!
We are proud to share the same land parcel donated by the Ryder family
where Gabriel's and Town Hall presently reside.

Godfrey Ryder ( 1797 - 1876)

Ryder was one of the citizens of Provincetown that donated High Pole Hill to the town. The Ryder family owned from High Pole Hill all the way down to the water. It was the site of the old Town Hall which mysteriously burned in 1877 and became the site of the Pilgrim Memorial Monument in 1907. The current Provincetown Town Hall stands on the site of the Ryder Homestead which was donated to the town by his son Rev. William Henry Ryder in 1885.

Built in 1885, Town Hall is the seat of Provincetown's government. Paintings from the town's large collection of work by local artists hang in its corridors, offices and meeting rooms. In 1915 the Art Association presented its first exhibition here and, until 1921, scheduled two major Town Hall shows each year. For decades the Artists' Costume Ball also was held here.

In the main corridor hang two paintings by Charles Hawthorne. By establishing his Cape Cod School of Art in 1899 Hawthorne brought into being the Provincetown art colony. "The Crew of the Philomena Manta" was painted in his studio at Days Lumberyard where students, fellow artists and townspeople posed for him.

This painting and "Fish Cleaners" on the opposite wall reflect Hawthorne's abiding interest in the life of the local Portuguese fishermen.

Ross Moffett studied with Hawthorne and was one of the first year-round painters in Provincetown, moving into Days Lumberyard in 1914. "Gathering Beach Plums" and "Spreading Nets," his large murals in the Town Hall entrance were painted in 1934 under the federal Public Works of Art Project of the Depression era.

More than thirty other paintings from the Provincetown art collection can be seen in Town Hall offices and hallways. Demonstrating a variety of styles, most of the work was produced in the first half of the 20th century and many of the pieces depict Provincetown scenes.

Joseph Prosper Johnson (1814 - 1891 )

The Hon. Joseph P. Johnson was an outstanding business and civic leader in Provincetown. Johnson was a director of Provincetown's first bank, Town Moderator for twenty years, Selectman for eight years, the House of Representatives for seven terms and a State Senator for two terms. He purchased the town's first fire engine in 1836 and donated the clock in the Town Hall tower in 1885

Old Town Clock

When the four faces of Provincetown’s Town Clock took to disagreeing with one another, they started one of the old town’s liveliest Town Hall debates in many a year.

They reminded one of the man who was asked why the town clock had four faces, anyway. He answered, “So that more than one person can look at it at the same time.” Another was reminded of the old conundrum, “If the town clock runs eight days without winding, how long would it run if it were wound?”

Provincetown’s town clock is an eight-day clock, and is wound by hand. At times the high winds have caught the hands and thrown the gears out of mesh. There is some danger incurred in winding the clock. Once one of the large and heavy weights came right through the side of the building!

Hannum was presented the trowel after the dedication of the Pilgrim Monument. During the dedication of the Monument in 1910, Hannum sat at the right side of President William H. Taft and acted as toastmaster at a banquet for six hundred people that followed at Provincetown Town Hall.
